The waves off Teahupo’o Tahiti are known as basically the gnarliest of the gnar; but last August, during the waiting period before the Billabong Pro the waves were so gnarly that the French Navy threatened to arrest anyone who tried to ride. So if you believe ESPN and various other headlines currently online, the above video of hawaiian big wave surfer Garrett McNamara hitting a monster wave off Nazaré Portugal, is a new world record for tallest wave ever successfully surfed. However there is a substantial debate within the surfing and internet dwelling obese neckbeard YouTube commenter communities about both the size of the wave and the veracity of the footage which seems to have some weird edits. BTW The current record is held by American surfer Mike Parsons, who hit a 77 foot wave in Southern California in 2008, pictured below. Record or not, its beyond arguing that this is a serious wave, that took a Guinness-worthy set of balls to ride.
