Clothing brand blogs are, for the most part, like small towns along the highway. They have the shit you need: gas, fast food, a place to piss (or in this case, the salient news of what sponsored athlete/musician did what, flyers for events you can’t attend because you don’t live in whatever city they’re in) but that’s really about it. “Nothing else to see here folks, keep moving along the information superhighway, please.” However there are a few notable exceptions. The one that most readily comes to mind is the blog portion of San Francisco based clothing company REBEL8′s website. The REBEL8 blog is something of a throwback to the old ideal of a blog; heavy on images, text and first-person storytelling and for the most part devoid of embedded widgets, video players and sundry other needless distractions. But what it lacks in flash it more than makes up for in substance. From the Buddhism-infused spiritual musings of artist Mike Giant to documentation of the incessant worldwide traveling of the REBEL8 staff to just good old fashioned pics of the bomb cuisine and nightlife of their native San Francisco, the REBEL8 blog actually succeeds in what the majority of brand blogs strive for but fail to achieve: giving you a feel for the people and places behind the product.
